Sudden changes to plans are becoming more common. Do you agree? There are many reasons why passengers struggle during train journeys, like not having enough time to get to their boarding location. But there’s no need to worry! From now on, train travelers can change their boarding stations up to 30 minutes before their train leaves. The Southern Indian Railways has introduced a new, more flexible rule for altering boarding points starting from April 1, 2026. In a statement, the officials shared that travelers can adjust their boarding station just half an hour before the train's scheduled departure. This new system allows for changes until the second and final reservation chart is created. To clarify, this chart is usually made 30 minutes before the train departs from its original station. This new feature is designed to make traveling by train easier and to help with last-minute changes in plans. Now, travelers can choose from various railway stations, making their journey more convenient. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw mentioned on March 24 that this new option will ensure passengers won’t lose their confirmed seats if they miss boarding at the initial station.

For example, if a person booked a ticket from Station 1 but can only arrive at Station 5 in time for the train there, they can get on at Station 5, as long as they change their boarding point 30 minutes before the chart is made. This service can be accessed through the Passenger Reservation System (PRS) or online at the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website. Passengers with confirmed tickets or RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) tickets can take advantage of this new option from the Railways. However, the boarding point can only be changed once. Requests must be submitted before the final chart is prepared, and no changes are permitted after that. This option is not available for those with waitlisted tickets. Passengers who purchased tickets at railway counters can ask to change their boarding points by going to the nearest Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counter, which is a specific, computerized location for booking and canceling Indian Railways tickets.
