Kalonji seeds, full of important nutrients, are considered a crucial part of Indian cooking. They have a nutty and slightly bitter flavor, making them a popular spice in curries, pickles, and naan bread to enhance taste. Also referred to as black seeds, nigella seeds, or black cumin, these seeds are rich in protein, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, and fats, as well as essential minerals like calcium, phosphorus, iron, sodium, and potassium, along with vitamins A, C, E, and K. But are you aware of the real advantages of these tear-drop shaped black seeds that come from the Nigella sativa plant?

Gastroenterologist Saurabh Sethi posted a video on Instagram to discuss whether black seeds are genuinely beneficial. He notes in the caption, “Black seeds (or Nigella sativa and kalonji) are often dubbed a miracle seed - but do they truly warrant that title? Let’s uncover their actual benefits, who can gain from them, and in what situations they might not be suitable for your gut health or overall wellness. ”

Take a look at the truths and misconceptions about kalonji seeds below:

They assist in reducing blood pressure and cholesterol.
They enhance insulin sensitivity and stabilize blood sugar.
They help decrease inflammation and alleviate joint discomfort. Dr Sethi mentions, “We have some data from rheumatoid arthritis studies indicating that inflammatory markers improved. ”
They can benefit asthma and allergy sufferers.
They are rich in antioxidants.
They offer protection for the liver and kidneys, although Dr Sethi notes that they are “promising but mostly backed by experimental studies. ”
Nonetheless, Dr Sethi points out that kalonji seeds are not a “miracle for weight loss. ”
He also mentions that while you can use the seeds in cooking, they should not be consumed excessively. “They can be toxic in very high amounts,” he states. The gastroenterologist suggests a daily intake of half to one teaspoon of the seeds.

Nigella seeds provide several other health advantages:

Acts as a natural protector: These seeds are full of antioxidants and substances like thymoquinone, which have properties that fight bacteria and viruses. They aid in neutralizing harmful free radicals and combating infections.

Enhances metabolism and digestion: Research shows that kalonji seeds can help reduce gas and bloating. Kalonji oil is also known to safeguard the stomach lining from gastric ulcers.

Helps manage blood sugar: Clinical studies indicate that nigella seeds can lower glucose absorption in the intestines and enhance glucose tolerance, leading to reduced fasting blood sugar and HbA1c levels.

Supports heart health: The healthy fats present in nigella seeds, like oleic and linoleic acids, help balance LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides. Their anti-inflammatory effects also lower oxidative stress on heart muscles.

Improves skin and hair condition: The anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties in kalonji, including nigellone and thymoquinone, promote clearer skin and healthier hair.

Boosts immune health: Consuming a moderate amount regularly may help strengthen the immune system by improving the body's natural defense mechanisms.

May support respiratory well-being: Kalonji seeds are traditionally used to alleviate coughs, congestion, and mild breathing issues due to their ability to open airways.

To sum up, nigella seeds provide many health advantages, including helping the immune system, aiding digestion, regulating blood sugar, promoting heart health, and improving skin condition. Nonetheless, this traditional superfood must be eaten in limited amounts and according to the suggested dosage.
