Following days filled with conjecture, renowned Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect through an emotional message shared on Instagram. This came shortly after India's Test captain Rohit Sharma revealed his own decision to retire from this format, which led to reports about Kohli conveying similar intentions to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). This news sent ripples of shock throughout the cricketing community. It was suggested that the board tried to persuade him to reconsider his decision; however, it appears their efforts did not bear fruit.

In his heartfelt post, Virat reminisced about his debut from 14 years ago when he first donned the iconic blue jersey. "It has been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Truthfully, I never anticipated the journey this format would lead me on. It has challenged me, molded me, and imparted lessons that I will cherish for a lifetime. Playing in whites carries a personal significance. The subtle struggles, the lengthy days, and those fleeting moments that go unnoticed yet remain etched in my memory forever," he shared on social media.

Virat acknowledged that arriving at the decision to step back was a significant challenge, yet it felt appropriate to him. "As I leave this format, it’s not an easy choice — yet it feels right. I have poured everything I had into this, and it has rewarded me much more than I ever expected. I'm departing with immense gratitude — for the sport, for those I’ve shared the field with, and for each individual who has recognized my journey along the way." He concluded by stating, "I will always reflect on my Test career with joy. 269, signing off."

Throughout his career, Kohli played 123 Test matches for India, amassing 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries and 31 fifties, with a personal best of 254. Regardless of playing at home or abroad, Virat consistently impressed with his batting prowess, allowing his performances to speak volumes. Nonetheless, he might carry the disappointment of not surpassing the 10,000 run milestone in Test cricket.

Kohli’s exit from the longest format adds to the growing list of retirements among Indian stalwarts. Following Ravichandran Ashwin (who retired in December) and Rohit Sharma (who stepped down last week), Virat has now become the third prominent player to announce his departure. Additionally, discussions regarding senior pacer Mohammed Shami’s future in the Test squad have also emerged.
