The Indian automotive market is enthusiastically preparing for the arrival of the Volkswagen Golf GTI. Simultaneously, the German manufacturer is gearing up to initiate the development of an all-electric Golf GTI for the global market. To date, the GTI branding has appeared on electric vehicles, but only in conceptual designs. For example, the ID.GTI concept was unveiled in 2023, with a more recent model, the ID.3 GTI, expected to launch in Europe in 2026. Now, Volkswagen intends to produce the electric version of the Golf GTI. This confirmation regarding the electric Golf GTI was shared directly by the CEO. Thomas Schafer, in an interview with AutoExpress, stated that the Golf GTI EV will come to fruition before the decade concludes. He confidently described the forthcoming electric hatchback as a "monster." As Schafer put it, "At the end of the decade, we will bring an electric Golf GTI, and that will be a monster car."

Additionally, Volkswagen's CEO announced plans for the Golf R EV's development. This electric Golf R will feature an all-wheel-drive system, whereas the electric Golf GTI will maintain a front-wheel-drive setup, akin to its internal combustion engine model. Both vehicles will be built on the Scalable Systems Platform (SSP), which is also set to be utilized by various other brands within the VW Group. Regarding the design aspects, digital development for the new model is currently in progress, paving the way to creating a physical prototype. Schafer remarked, "We know what the vehicle looks like and [can] sit virtually in the vehicle. The platform’s dimensions and the vehicle's size are defined, although not finalized down to the last detail. We still have numerous iterations to complete."
