On Friday, Bajinder Singh, a self-proclaimed Christian pastor known as the "Yeshu Yeshu prophet" in Punjab, was found guilty in a rape case from 2018. The 42-year-old was taken into custody that year for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman from Zirakpur, Punjab, after deceiving her with false promises of helping her travel abroad. The sentencing will be revealed on April 1. Additionally, six individuals involved in the case have been acquitted. Singh has a history of controversies; a recent viral video depicted him physically assaulting a man and a woman in his office. In the footage, he was shown throwing items and striking the individuals present. He first repeatedly slapped the man, and then engaged in a confrontation with the woman, during which he threw a book at her and slapped her.
On February 28, Singh faced additional charges for purportedly sexually harassing a 22-year-old woman. According to her allegations, she and her family began attending Singh’s church in October 2017. The pastor obtained her phone number and started sending her messages, which she didn’t disclose to her parents due to fear of him. The woman claimed that starting in 2022, Singh would isolate her in a church cabin on Sundays, where he would allegedly embrace her and touch her inappropriately. Moreover, she asserted that he threatened her and her family with violence if she reported him.
In 2022, Singh was also accused of accepting money from a family in Delhi to treat their ailing daughter, who tragically did not survive. The income-tax department conducted a raid on his properties in 2023. Originally from a Jat family in Haryana, Singh converted to Christianity over a decade ago and operates churches in both Jalandhar and Mohali, boasting a large following on social media.
