If you are one of those regular social media users, then you must have come through your feed filled with a photo of him/her, showing what they were in 2009 and what they are now.

You are probably wondering why people everywhere on social media all at once want people to know what they looked like before 10 years.

In the first social media craze of 2019, the #10YearChallenge is taking the internet by storm. In fact, what you have to do is post two photographs of yourself side-by-side - showing what you looked like in 2009 and you look like at present.

Why Did It Started?

The idea obviously is to give the world a glimpse of what you used to look like, possibly because the friends you have today did not even know you 10 years ago.

According to TweetBinder.com (a website that allows you to track tweets on a hashtag for free), the potential reach of #10YearChallenge is over 6 million, meaning it would have been viewed by that many people.

Likewise, Google Trends as well shows that the interest in the 10 Year Challenge has been growing abruptly across the world since January 14. According to Google Trends, India appears to have picked up the trend from January 15, but it is on an abrupt rise here as well.

Who Started It?

Dissimilar to earlier challenges on the internet, the origin of the #10YearChallenge is not quite clear just yet. However, it is surely been fueled by a lot of celebrity inputs.

Reese Witherspoon, an American actress posted a #10YearChallenge photos of herself on her Twitter handle, showing how she has aged.

As part of the challenge, Indian celebrities like Raashi Khanna, Shilpa Shetty, Sonam Kapoor, Vishal Dadlani, Bipasha Basu etc. have also posted photos of themselves.

In satire to #10YearChallenge on the social media, people have begun posting photos of empty wallets with 2009 and 2019 tags on them, while some others have used the hashtag to promote causes, such as melting polar ice caps, by posting photos of them from 2009 and now.
