The inaugural Champions Trophy event took place in Lahore on Sunday night, signaling the upcoming tournament set to begin on February 19, featuring host nation Pakistan and strong contenders New Zealand. A total of 15 matches will occur in both Pakistan and Dubai, following India's decision not to visit Pakistan. Instead, India will compete in neutral United Arab Emirates venues. The Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore decorated itself with flags representing seven nations, with India's flag notably absent, as indicated by a tweet. This tournament is significant as it marks the first time since 1996 that Pakistan has hosted an ICC event; matches will occur in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. Pakistan enters the tournament as the defending champions, having triumphed against India by 180 runs in the final at The Oval in London during the 2017 edition.

At the Curtain Raiser event, held at the beautifully illuminated Lahore Fort, members of the 2017 trophy-winning team were present. Mohsin Naqvi, chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), described the hosting of the Champions Trophy as a "historic moment" for the nation and its cricket-loving populace. "The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 returning to Pakistan marks the first such occurrence in 29 years," Naqvi remarked during the event. He emphasized that "this tournament transcends mere cricket; it showcases Pakistan’s hospitality and fervor." He also noted the importance of the venue, stating that it not only highlights Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage but also symbolizes the long-standing tradition of cricket in the country.

Naqvi further encouraged the audience, saying, "This is your moment to fill the stadiums." In terms of groupings, Pakistan will compete against New Zealand, India, and Bangladesh, while the other group consists of Australia, England, South Africa, and first-time participants Afghanistan. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.
